“You have to feel the truth of the woman,” said the Burberry makeup artistic consultant Wendy Rowe, as she unveiled the poetic beauty look for the label’s February 2017 collection.

“You need to feel the skin. You need to see the skin,” she added, applying a little Burberry Fresh Glow foundation in Nude to even out a model’s skin tone, before getting to work with a Face Contour pen, which she dotted onto the forehead and cheeks for a softly sculpted effect. Reinforcing the natural shadows and the highlights of the face, Rowe’s truthful beauty mantra echoed the sculptural theme of a collection inspired by the British artist Henry Moore — whose epic bronzes made a dramatic appearance on the runway.

“It’s not theatrical,” Rowe continued, as she swept Fresh Glow Luminous Highlighting pen across a model’s lids to open up the eye, then running a touch of Effortless Kohl eyeliner in Stone along the waterline, for brightness. “We want the real woman.” In line with the show’s sculptural feel, Rowe skipped the mascara, simply brushing the brows before getting to work on the mouth, adding Lip Color contour in several pinkish shades that matched the models’ natural skin tones, defining and slightly shading the lips in what she called, “a soft and truthful way.” The final flourish was a hit of Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid base, which brought a watery glow to the skin on the runway. Even its glistening ingredient — crushed pearls — made a clever allusion to the earthy treasures — stones, shells — that so delighted Moore. “This is effortless face sculpting for the everyday woman,” Rowe said. “Let’s call it reality contouring.”
